Here’s Whether Van Insurance Is Cheaper Than Car or Not

Generally, vans are more expensive to insure than cars as they’re mostly used for commercial purposes, and commercial auto insurance costs more.

However, if not for commercial usage (same annual mileage, usage, etc.), insuring a mid-size van can actually cost less than insuring a larger car (sedan).

For example, the average van insurance price obtained from the 3 leading insurance companies in the US is $171.57 per month, while car insurance rate is $173.43.

These rates are based on personal auto insurance quotes for a mid-size van (Mercedes-Benz Metris) and a large sedan (Ford Fusion).

This means that van insurance may actually be slightly cheaper, provided all other details such as usage and annual mileage are the same or very similar.

But more often than not, van insurance will cost more than car insurance because vans are typically used for commercial purposes, which means a higher insurance premium.

Insuring a large commercial van will obviously be more expensive than a small car used for daily commute.

It’s also worth noting that the insurance premium for your van will go up if it:

  • Has any modifications.
  • Carries tools or equipment.
  • Has more than 5 seats.
  • Is used for work/commercial purposes.

And to help you get a better idea about van insurance rates and how they stack up to car insurance prices, in this article, I’ll cover the following topics:

  • The primary factors that affect van insurance cost.
  • The average insurance rates for vans in the US and how they compare to car insurance prices.
  • Actual examples from insurance companies, which show that van insurance may sometimes actually be slightly cheaper than car insurance.
  • Tips to save on your van insurance.

Average Van vs Car Insurance Prices in the US

Below you’ll see a comparison between the average van insurance rates and how they compare to car insurance. These are based on actual prices that I’ve personally obtained from the leading insurance companies in the US:

Van Insurance Rates and How They Compare to Car Insurance Prices

VehicleState Farm Geico Liberty Mutual
Van $212.40 per month $165.02 per month$137.29 per month
Car$186.85 per month $175.67 per month$157.79 per month

Also, these are the raw monthly insurance prices i.e. without the “pay in full” discounts.

And any discounts for paying in full are only available if you buy insurance for a certain period (e.g. 6 months).

The Main Factors that Affect Van Insurance Cost

Insurance companies consider a wide range of factors to determine what your van premium will be, including the following primary things that affect insurance cost:

1. The Type of Van Insurance Policy

You typically have two insurance type options for a van, depending on what you use it for:

  • Commercial (business) – This insurance will be your go-to policy type if you use your van for commercial purposes. It’s usually more expensive due to the increased risk of a claim.
  • Personal – You can also go for personal van insurance, but only if you use it for personal purposes e.g. daily commute to and from work.

Also, if your van has commercial license plates, you’ll need commercial van insurance so that you don’t put your business at risk.

2. Any Extra Features Added to the Policy

Adding any extra features to your van insurance policy will most likely raise the price.

Depending on how your van is used, some of the most common van insurance options and add-ons that can increase your premium are:

  • Roadside assistance coverage – This add-on covers roadside assistance in case you have to deal with a flat tire, a dead battery, etc.
  • Gap coverage – This extra option for your policy is meant to pay the difference between the van’s loan amount and your standard insurance coverage.
  • New vehicle replacement coverage – This policy add-on helps you pay for a new van if your current one needs to be replaced due to an accident. It only helps you pay for one of equal or lesser value.

3. The Model and Specifications of the Van

A more upmarket, expensive, and powerful van will cost more to insure as it’d be more expensive to replace if an accident occurs.

For example, you can expect a higher premium for a high roof, long wheelbase 4×4 V6 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in high-end trim level than the same model but with an entry-level and a 4-cylinder engine.

4. The Number of Miles You Accumulate per Year

Doing lots of miles on a regular basis means that your premium will be higher than someone who’s only doing less than 10k miles per year.

Practical Tips to Lower Your Van Insurance

Although van insurance is a necessary expense, the following tips can help reduce the overall cost of your policy:

  • Build up your no-claim bonus – Each year without making a claim means that you’ll get a discount on your next renewal.
  • Keep your van in a garage – Parking your vehicle in a secure place (e.g. a garage or a private driveway) can help you save a bit off your insurance premium.
  • Utilize auto insurance discounts – Insurance companies offer various discounts (e.g. 5% for enabling automatic premium payments or a 35% “good student” discount ).
  • Drive safely – Avoid any traffic violations so that you don’t get a ticket and your insurance company will reward you with a lower premium.
  • Improve your credit score – Try keeping your credit card balance way below the limits and make sure that you’re paying for your loans and/or covering your credit card payments on time for lower van insurance rates.

Conclusion

As a general rule of thumb, van insurance is not cheaper than car insurance, the price depends on the vehicle and how it’s used.

That’s because most vans are used for work as part of business fleet vehicles and commercial auto insurance costs more than personal auto insurance.

But when a van is used for personal reasons (e.g. daily commuting) and insured the same way most cars are (i.e. personal auto insurance), then you may find that van insurance can actually cost slightly less.

For example, the average insurance cost for a Mercedes-Benz Metris in the US is around $137.29 to $212.40 per month, while insuring a Ford Fusion will typically cost about $157.79 to $186.85 per month.

Eventually, your van insurance premium will largely depend on:

  1. How your van is used.
  1. The number of miles you do.
  1. The size, make, model and trim level of the van.

To get the most accurate insurance rate for your van, I’d recommend going to your preferred insurance company and requesting a quote directly from them. I have also done this job and have put the following quotes below, which you may find useful. These quotes helped me be sure that the information above is correct.

Examples of When Van Insurance May Be Cheaper

To show you that van insurance may sometimes be slightly cheaper than car insurance, I’ve personally requested sample insurance quotes from the big 3 insurance companies in the US – State Farm, Geico and Liberty Mutual.

For this example, both the van and the car quotes have the same/very identical annual mileage, use (personal), and model year (2020).
